Description Syklaw 2022-04-01 05:12:42 UTC
Steps:
send a mail to yourself with 'Options/request return receipt'

Problem 1[specially if there are no other mails in inbox]: click on IMAP inbox shows nothing [if before you click on Sylpheed's IMAP inbox, it sometimes shows there, but then doesn't anymore after clicking on Claws' IMAP inbox].

Problem 2: So, since it is not in IMAP inbox , you click on 'All mail' folder ; 'select all' [or click on the email] so it triggers the sending of the return receipt [without asking, bad issue but we want that for this experiment].

1 click on 'Sent' folder and delete the now 2 emails
2 click on 'All mail' folder and delete the now 2 emails
3 click on 'Trash' folder [1] and delete the now 2 emails . The 2 emails appear greyed out in 'All mail' folder . Go to 2...endless loop.

Partial solution: Get mail using POP, then on IMAP 'Trash' folder [the 2nd] delete all , then Go to 2... repeat some times and if you are lucky email 1 may delete, but email 2 [the return receipt] is impossible to delete in Claws IMAP,endless loop.

Annoyng but working solution [without having to go to webmail]:
in Sylpheed click back and forth between IMAP's 'Trash' folder [2] and 'All mail' folder and after max 3 times the 2 emails greyed out in 'All mail' folder finally dissapear.
in Claws i tried the same many many times to no avail, it's like the same function has more force on Sylpheed, in Claws works but never deletes 'for ever' , it ping pongs between any of the 'Trash' folders [1 or 2] and 'All mail' folder endlessly.

I tried in Claws: '/View/Update summary', 'Rebuild folder tree', 'Check for new messages' and 'Check for new folders', in various folders to no result ,
and on webmail with both the IMAP options default 'auto' [after delete keep an archive ], or 'delete for ever', both work the same.

I'm moving to Linux, [happens there?] but not yet, so for now in Win7 this is maddening.
Thx

[just in case, i cannot use v4 because can't see if the check boxes in preferences are checked or not ]

In practice deleting emails have never been possible since Google reads and collects all emails for marketing and extradite to NSA so in theory gmail only supports logical deletes - hide it for the user.

Have you tried different themes for your desktop?

If you can't see wheteher the checkboxes are checked, this can only be because of a broken gtk theme. Choose another.

Closing this as INVALID, because it seems this is down to gmail's bastardised imap implementation.

[Note. My pre-point1 'send a mail to yourself with 'Options/request return receipt'' is done with POP]
Yes i'm aware that google IMAP is weird, but the fact remains [1*] that with Sylpheed it can be done reliably, ['delete' ('for ever', at least at the surface level; if G keeps all 'internally' is another matter, you can't change that but only certain 'agencies' would have acces to those mails),

with Sylpheed's way to delete, if one or anyone 'normal' goes to the webmail the deleted emails are not there anymore, and don't appear greyed in IMAP, and don't get re-downloaded like happens if one chooses 'delete all' in one of the Trash folders in Claws (as explained it goes then to 'All mail' folder so then would get re-downloaded by POP).

Also the fact remains [2*] that with Sylpheed if you click on the IMAP inbox, [or use "POP3 remote mailbox" https://www.thewildbeast.co.uk/claws-mail/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4578 ] many times, the emails remain there, with Claws if you click on the IMAP inbox it makes the emails to not show anymore in IMAP inbox either in Sylpheed or Claws, in other words, somehow clicking Claws IMAP inbox 'ruins it' [untill new email arrives].

fact [1*] that with Sylpheed delete 'for ever' for 'normal' people can be done reliably, eg:
1 use "POP3 remote mailbox" , download or delete what you want [or do it in IMAP inbox, but risk that return receipts get 'autosended' or that accidentaly clicking a big email downloads it; with 'POP3 remote mailbox' none of these risks happen]
2 click on IMAP 'Trash' folder [2nd] and delete the emails
3 click on 'All mail' folder and delete the emails
4 click on IMAP 'Trash' folder [1st] and delete the emails
5 click on IMAP 'All mail' folder [you see the emails greyed]
6 click on IMAP inbox folder
7 click on IMAP 'All mail' folder [you see the emails gone!]

So if someone 'normal' hacks your account, won't see the deleted mails.
7 steps, annoying, but with Sylpheed is doable
[and it doesn't 'ruins' [Claws do it temporalily] the IMAP inbox by clicking on it .
So please don't close this, if the codes of Sylpheed and Claws are still not too different, maybe you can compare and see why it's IMAP behaves a little better.
Thx

so it seems v4 vs 3.18 doesn't affect this,so i'll stay in v3...( just in case, can i install v4 'over' 3.18, or have to uninstall 3.18 first, would my emails, configs etc remain? ) ,
so just to answer  comment #3 and #4, when i tried  v4 i did not tried different themes for my desktopt, [windows7  themes ,  *gtk* themes i didn't know i can change? [ Claws themes i tried some in v3.18 but i only see they change icons, not colors, and anyway   v3.18 *follows* my w7  theme, and no problem seeing checkboxes, whilst v4 does *not* follow my w7  theme (mainly  v4 its white, that hurts my eyes )and i can't see if the checkboxes are checked or not...   ;
i have no problems with checkboxes in any other program... ]

The reason for this is because you have 2 apparent Trash folders, but only one of them is the actual Trash folder.

Identify which is the actual Trash folder, use its Proeprties to set Folder Type "Trash".

Many thanks!
Still there's something strange with IMAP inbox folder, i sent an email to myself, but it does not appear in IMAP inbox folder, only in 'Sent' and in 'All' [which now i can delete :) ],
so as long as i can see the mails in other folders, and delete, it doesn't bother me now, i'll wait to see if some future mails appear IMAP inbox folder, or if not, if i need it, but for now i think i could manage without that folder functioning, thx!!

gmail hides your own mails in that way. Another mis-feature, which can be annoying for users of mailing lists.
