Description rob 2023-05-04 06:07:44 UTC
Emails received, old and new, show in the UI message list.

When clicking on an item, a delay occurs of about 2 seconds, before the contents of the email are shown and before the email is opened.

What could be the reason for the delay?

Other email clients have no delay.

System Information
Claws-Mail 4.1.1 (flatpak)
GTK 3.24.37 / GLib 2.72.4
Locale: en_AU.UTF-8 (charset: UTF-8)
Operating System: Linux 6.2.6-76060206-generic (x86_64)

This is a bug tracker, not a user forum. You should've used the users' mailing list for this query, (see https://www.claws-mail.org/MLs.php).

A 2 second delay is not normal. Is this IMAP and the connection to the server is a bit slow? Is it something to do with flatpak which, afaik, is generally slower than regular packaging?

Maybe /Tools/Network Log will give you an indication of where the bottleneck occurs, or perhaps the debug log?

Thanks for comment.

The email server and client are configured for POP.

The logs show no issues.

The delay is not caused by the network connection. The delay occurs after emails are received.

The delay is caused by the ClawsMail GUI or some other factor with Claws, when accessing the local files.

afaik, such delay is a bug with the app. I can see nothing in the Claws config menus to indicate how such delay occurs.

note: Other flatpak pop email clients have no such delay.

Do you use filtering rules?

During this 2-sec delay, is the Claws Mail window frozen, not refreshing or not responsive?

If you receive email while having the Tools/Network log open, is the delay clearly after the last message shown in log from the pop server?

Does this 2-sec delay happen because a message view is being opened or refreshed, thus it would be the loading of the message body contrent (HTML?) that would take so much time?

1/ filters. Switching filters on or off has no effect on delay.

2/ window. The Claws GUI is unresponsive during the delay.

3/ network. No network delays.

4/ view. Delay occurs when message view is opened or refreshed by user, resulting in longer delay to display message body content.

Can you try a package which is not a flatpak package, or build yourself from source?
Comment 6 rob 2023-05-04 12:03:35 UTC
Well, the purpose of this thread is to discuss/reveal a bug with the Clawsmail 4.1.1 flatpak package. Change to a different pkg, say deb, negates this thread.

Other email clients, such as Tbird flat or deb, have no such lag. So, I rather doubt the fault lies with my system.

But, which Claws pkg and release would you suggest? I surmise I would be able to install a deb only.

thanks.

We have nothing to do with the flatpak packaging, you should ask the flatpak packagers of Claws Mail directly if you have questions about the packaging.

Your comparison can give false indications, so you can verify or eliminate your doubts by trying a standard distro package.

If you use a deb-based system, then of course try the deb package provided by your distro.

Could you advise me how to contact the flatpak people?

I shall attempt a deb pkg. Do I need to purge the flatpak? Or can the flat and deb be installed and run in the same desktop?

thanks.

resolved, partly.

After installing the deb pkg with plugins, the same delay occurs.

After deleting all plugins, no delay.

If I can determine which plugin(s) are at fault, I shall post to this thread.

Thank you.

Presumably a plugin that is using the network. I'll guess Libravatar.
