Did "Hide read messages" on my claws-mail folder and now, I can/t show/unhide them. Changing hidereadthreads to "0" resolces this issue.
Also, "Hide read threads" greys "Hide read messages" Suggestion: on the "Hide..." menu items, they should be changed to Show or Unhide; it's illogical to use "Hide..." to Unhide/Show...
I think you are have mixed up the 2 menu items "Hide read threads" and "Hide read messages". Activating one greys out the other. In your initial comment, 'hidereadthreads="1" and hidereadmsgs="0"' shows that you had activated 'hide read threads' and not 'hide read messages' as you thought. 'hide read threads' greys out 'hide read messages'. I think the use of the tick box on these menu items makes the logic clear,
