My issue/question is most closely described by Bug 1866 - 'claws should make use of the IMAP 'deleted' flag' which is marked as fixed. I use Alpine and claws-mail, mostly using claws-mail to read HTML message as needed. The goal is to be able to use claws-mail to do folder maintenance and have this be compatible with Alpine. I kind of think the default should be for Draft, Sent, and Trash to be on the server. Most other clients however do it as claws-mail does. A reading of 1866, fixed in 2009, seems to imply adding an option to make Trash a virtual folder or to be able to define delete to only mark the message deleted. Claws-mail recognizes and treats messages so flagged correctly AFAIK (I have not looked for how to expunge messages in claws-mail). I would like an option for delete simply to flag a message as deleted.
That is exactly what disabling "Execute immediately when moving or deleting messages" checkbox in preferences does. It is on the Summaries page. With that checkbox disabled, your IMAP messages will be marked as deleted when you "Delete", and marked for moving when you "Move to trash".
Thank you for the response. I would have never found it. Is there a technical reason this is a global setting and not an account setting?
The reason is that Claws Mail internally handles all message moves and deletions with a flag, and immediate or deferred execution. Even for messages in local folders. If you want to discuss further, please use our mailing list, as bugzilla is not a discussion forum suited for that.

Even with "Execute immediately when moving or deleting messages" unchecked, and all of the "Put deleted messages in..." options unchecked, Claws (3.16.0, ubuntu) still uses the old bad behavior of moving messages to a separate folder --- it just waits until I "execute" before doing so. Claws still doesn't use the Deleted flag properly.
