I have turned on "Thread view", such that threads are displayed.  I sort by date (old to new, downwards).  When there is a reply from an old message, the sorting is still on the root message.  I think it is better if the thread is reordered such that it is treated as the most recent message when the thread contains the newest message in the folder.

Use /View/Sort/By Thread date.
