Once a folder type has been changed to "Outbox" (and maybe also to other types – I didn't check) there doesn't seem to be any way of changing it, or any of its children, back again. Steps to reproduce: 1. Right-click on a regular IMAP folder that has child folders. 2. Select "Properties…". 3. Select "Outbox" from the "Folder type" drop-down list. 4. Press "OK". The folder and its children change type, as evidenced by the folder icons. 5. Right-click on the same folder, or any of its children. 6. Select "Properties…". 7. The "Folder type" drop-down box is now inactive. It is not possible to select a new value.

The MUST be an Outbox. You can set another folder as Outbox, but you can't change the only Outbox.
I see. So when archiving my sent messages to another folder, is there no way to make that folder display the "To" column instead of the "From" column, other than by making it a child of my outbox?

Also see the information about the 'enable_swap_from' preference in Hidden Preference page of the manual: http://www.claws-mail.org/manual/claws-mail-manual.html#adv_hidden

This seems to be a global setting, not per-folder.
