No matter what is selected, all messages are removed from the server when received. No option to keep it on the server for  anumber of days.

It works for me. Is this with your gmail pop account? Perhaps gmail's pop is exhibiting strange behaviour, will need to check that.

Can you verify this bug with the latest release, 3.11.1?

I went ahead and tested a gmail pop account.

Gmail is the problem. It has a setting, "When messages are accessed with POP ...", and this overrides and ignores whatever the MUA is telling it. This isn't a bug in Claws, but another misfeature in gmail.
