Currently expunging only works if one is in a with expungable messages (IMAP flag "deleted") and they are not hidden by View/Hide deleted messages.  This is a lot of work for an account with many folders.
Please make the expunge menu item accessible as soon as there are deleted messages even if they are hidden from view.  Going into the root of the account (just one up of INBOX), should make it possible to expunge recursively.
