Description Bruno 2008-05-12 14:03:15 UTC
Currently the identities (from email address with related options) are linked together with receiving and sending accounts.

They should be split:
- Receiving accounts should be independent. They just tell where to look
  for emails
- Sending accounts should be mostly independent (may link to receiving
  account for credentials)
- Identities should just references accounts above to select default
outgoing server and target forlder for sent emails.

It's quite common to have multiple email addresses for a single mailbox or even using a same address under different conditions (e.g. once with extended signature crypto and once without any gimmicks)
In addition one may have forward/alias email addresses that have no own mailbox or smtp server.

I agree, I'd like to see this too...

same here - and some questions on mailinglist seem to request it, too.

esp: I dont like to create "send-only" accounts for dealing with several mail-adr for one smtp-server.

I'd like to add my request for this please. With Demon customers in the UK, we can have an effectively infinite number of email addresses on one account, which makes life a lot easier when filtering incoming mail. I regularly use a couple of dozen different identities on the one account; separating receiving and sending identities would allow just one "get mail" operation rather than a dozen or more at once. (The latter is because the automatic timed getting of mails seems to use the 'get mail from all accounts' function.)

Hmm, looking at src/prefs_account.h I see it will be a big change in the code to implement this.

As an interim, may I suggest adding another option to the preferences->Mail Handling->Receiving menu: Under Automatic checking, a pull-down menu to select whether to auto chack all accounts or only the current account, just as can be done for the Get Mail button on the main toolbar?

Regards,
Roger.

It would be realy helpfully to configure multiple e-mail alias per account, so we don't have to type each time the different aliases. Also it could be a solution for Bug #4042

Just create a new "SMTP only" Account with preferred settings and copy them to use it with different alias. Don't forget to set the folder settings pointing to the receiving (IMAP/POP) account. Also a solution for Bug #4042 Thanks!
