Bug 4101

Summary: Message selected in message list doesn't make sense
Product: Claws Mail (GTK 2) Reporter: Dan <dengel>
Component: UI/Message ListAssignee: users
Status: RESOLVED INVALID
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Version: 3.17.1
Hardware: PC
OS: Linux

Description Dan 2018-10-15 02:13:28 UTC
Precondition:

Lots of messages in various folders, sorted by date.

Actions:

1. Select the Inbox, scroll to the most recent message and select it.

2. Select a different folder, scroll to the most recent message and select it.

3. Click on the Inbox.

Expected:

The most recent message is selected and the Inbox message list view is scrolled to show that selection.

Observed:

Some message, seemingly randomly selected, is shown.

Further Actions:

4. Select the most recent message in the Inbox.

5. Click on a folder other than the Inbox.

6. Get new messages.

7. Click on the Inbox.

Expected:

The message selected is either the one selected in Step 4 OR is the most recently received message fetched in Step 6.

Observed:

The same message from the previous observation is shown.

Go to Configuration->Preferences, in the dialog choose Summaries (under Display). The second control in "Message List" (the second box of controls) is a button which allows you to configure the message selected when you enter a folder.

If this solves your issue, please close the ticket as "invalid", otherwise please give more details about how the configuration and behavior differ from your expectations.

Thanks, @Shai! I completely missed that. Is that in the manual somewhere? I can't find it.

In the claws-mail main window: /Help/Manual

You missed that too, eh? :)

I can't find this preference mentioned in the manual either; I made it a point, when starting to use Claws, to look through the preferences for things I might like to tweak, so I remember some of them.

Somewhat surprisingly, the hidden preferences are better documented than the visible ones...

That's not surprising, in as much as the visible preferences are largely explanined with their labelling and placement within the UI. The hidden preferences, of course, are not.

Anyway, this whole item should have been a query to the users' mailing list, both the original question and any subequent discussion.
