To be fair, the exposé was in the media and it is also the same media that informs us of their own success in altering the public's confidence, in effect 'blowing their own trumpet'. One must ask who is this 'public' to which they refer? I do believe that a large number of the population have no reason or very little reason to ever trust the politicians and that they do not. I don't believe that the Telegraph, for example, speak on behalf of the working class, and I don't believe that this same people ever take their cue from the Telegraph as to what to think and when to think it. Their apparent 'apathy' is due in some respects to the oppressive social and economic conditions which they are forced to endure. It is only natural, it seems to me that, after hundreds of years of oppression and protest which has largely failed and which leaves them in the same weak position, they choose to bury their heads and attempt to enjoy the little they have. But there is a very delicate balance and the fight is far from over. And we know that.

Just to clarify further, my post is not a criticism of the oppressed but a criticism of the oppressors.

Finally took the time to read your long post :-) and it's very interesting, as usual... Your passion for history makes it more interesting than it ever was at school.
Concerning how surprising it is that "it takes something like this exposé in the media to lower the public's confidence" into politicians, well, as you're as pessimist and cynic as me, if not more, I don't think you'll learn anything if I tell you that the public is a big stupid sheep that only thinks about something as long as it's on TV. Talk about a new epidemy of flu (which isn't even worse than "normal" flu) or a crashed airliner, and the sheep forgets about the rest. Isn't that easy?
