In 1831 England was going through a time of great political turbulence. People desperately wanted changes in the system of government, more say in the management of their lives. They wanted Reform, and nowhere more than in the city of Bristol. In the Autumn the place erupted when a protest rally became an uprising. For three days, Bristol was the scene of fierce rioting, looting and arson. Faced with such unexpected fury the lawmen dithered; frightened by the consequences of taking firm action they did nothing, and the city went up in flames. By the time the fires had died down hundreds of people had died. In the aftermath the Mayor was put on trial, a colonel and two captains were Court Martialed, four citizens were hanged and dozens of people were imprisoned or deported to Australia. But the really guilty men got away with it. Contents
