Does the crash happen also with the 32-bit Claws Mail version?

You need to uninstall the 64-bit version before installing the 32-bit version (and vice versa), but your data and configuration will be preserved and are compatible, so you can change between the two versions anytime.

Thanks for getting back with me. I uninstalled 64bit and installed 32bit, which fails on start with the following error:
