Description Julien 2016-04-17 13:02:46 UTC
Hi,

As a packager for Mageia, I did a review of the themes distributed in claws-mail-theme package and I observed some issues with the license : no license file for a lot of themes, non-free themes, etc.

Here is a summary :

clearly non-free licenses :
buuf, hash303030, hashA0A0A0 (CC-BY-NC-SA)
buuf, skypilot_clawssic (seemingly freeware, no license file)

Unsure license (no license file, and lack of information) :
achileus-noame, black, clawsola, Everaldo_Kids, FreshBlack, Kovico-claws, Logos-1.0.1, mongrel, mongrel2, New_Session, Phoenity, Plain_and_Bluish, stw, Sylpholution, tml02c, tom_2.1.1, UltimateClawsMail0.5.1, XeNtish, ZX-0_1.1

Unsure but probably free software (no license file but initial icon set is free with gpl-like clause):
Crystal, Gnomaws-0.6a,Gorillaws, Old_Dark_Theme, orbit-claws

Free software :
A_Ducks_Claw, Blaue_Klaue, blue_anarchy, Coons-Blue-0.3, elementary, Fugue, Gnome, gnome-brave, Gnomeria, Graphitte-0.9.7, hydroxygen, KDE4ish, Korillaws, mozilla, Navigator, SylZilla, Tango_v1.2.1, TangoClaws-0.3, TangoOrbit

The attached file contain detailed data that I managed to find.
I'm not sure what can be done here except maybe require a free license with a license file in the theme and split the clearly non-free themes in a specific package.

regards
Julien

Already requested myself to remove the most troublesome one:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/821375

Which I think should be removed from Claws Mail too, BTW.

This theme took "LGPL or CC-something" licensed icons (Oxygen) and *relicensed* the derived work as GPL.

I've been unable to find where the original author gives permission to this relicensing, and AFAIK derived works should have been either LGPL or the CC-something, so this is not clear to me to be free software.

You can see more details of Debian removals on the script which cleans the tarball up:

http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/users/mones/claws-mail-themes.git/tree/make-upstream-tarball-DFSG

And also in the full copyright file:

Hi,

thanks for the script.

For KDE4ish, isn't the relicensing allowed by the license itself? (point 2b of LGPLv3 or point 3 of LGPLv2 & 2.1)
Or do I misunderstand the wording (I clearly ANAL) ?

thanks again

Yes, after reading those points I also think those allow relicensing under GPL.
