Description Eshat Cakar 2011-09-17 11:31:09 UTC
The title says it all: I always have a vertical scrollbar in my folderlist, which makes no sense if the list is smaller than your window height.
Just wastes display space, which is rare on my 12 inch notebook ;)
I am using Debian sid/unstable with latest claws-mail.

Check the User Manual (http://www.claws-mail.org/documentation.php), section 6.8 "Hidden Preferences", folderview_vscrollbar_policy
Comment 2 Eshat Cakar 2011-09-19 11:46:46 UTC
Thanks that worked.
I repopened the bug, because I would suggest, setting the default settings for folderview_vscrollbar_policy to 1 instead of 0, which means "display iy, when needed" instead "always visible".

The developers' policy is that the least surprising thing should be done as the default, that means having the scroll bars always visible.

You have the ability to change this if you want, it isn't necessary to force everyone else to change it because a small minority prefer it to work the other way.
Comment 4 Eshat Cakar 2011-09-19 12:11:06 UTC
Sorry, but that makes no sense, especially because all other scrollbars (i.e. horizontal and vertical in message list or vertical in message window) are only visible, if they are necessary.
Applying this to the folderlist, would be great, and as you say, less surprising.
Comment 5 Stefan Tauner 2012-04-26 18:49:15 UTC
this IS surprising and should be changed to be 1 on default. no idea how any dev with some experience in UID could come to the conclusion that disabling one non-functional, space-eating scrollbar of 6 possible scrollbars with a hidden(!) option is the way to go for most* users.

* based on my "random" sample with n=1 + some gut feeling that not many have that many folders in their list ;) TBH i cant remember what the default layout was (i am using "my" claws-mail for about 4 years), but that does not really matter: i can't imagine any layout where this would make sense for the majority of people.

was this ever evaluated - before or after pushing this change to all users? can someone link to the discussion leading to this change? thanks

What change are you talking about? It has been like that for all of Claws-Mail's lifespan.

(To be more precise: In the beginning, the policy of the scroll bar was hardcoded to "always", and it's been turned into a pref later on.)
Comment 7 Stefan Tauner 2012-04-26 20:34:19 UTC
ah i see, thanks for clarifying. then this got me again with my recent distribution upgrade, because i had the automatic behavior in the past. so much for "least surprising"... i fell for it twice :/

well now the "least surprise" makes at least a bit of sense. he meant that you dont wanted to change the previous behavior. while i agree on the concept in general, i disagree that it was applied here correctly. no one will miss a non-functional scrollbar or be surprised that it vanishes. everyone that needed it in the past would still have one if the default would be automatic.

My two cents are that in this day and age where widescreen is being pushed everywhere, for majority of claws-mail uses it's better to potentially sacrifice tiny bit of screen width in exchange for predictable folderlist width. The minority can flip the hidden pref and be happy as well. :)
