Description whats_up 2011-06-15 12:55:50 UTC
after (computer or claws) crashed certain settings are lost. Till now I only noticed the following issues:

- sort order of folders: I always use sort by date but for some (I think new) folders this reseted
- read status of mails: after crash some read mails become unread/new again

Try changing the 'meta-data handling' option. What works best depends on the underlying filesystem.

I've noticed this quite a bit myself. Font settings can definitely be lost. The state of deleted (but not expunged) messages too, though I can understand that that's a different kettle of fish.

I have Safer handling enabled.

where can I find the 'meta-data handling' option?

whats_up@..., here's how to find the "meta-data handling" option:
Open menu "Configuration > Preferences", select page "Miscellaneous" (below section "other").
The "meta-data handling" option lets you choose between "safer" and "faster".
Think of it as disabling / enabling a write-cache that accumulates your setting changes in memory before they are firmly written to disk.
IMHO "safer" on a modern system shouldn't make a notable difference in speed...

That option controlls fsync'ing stuff to disc, so it may very well make quite a difference, especially on modern filesystems.

ok found. But the 'meta-data handling' option was already 'save' in my case. The problem seems to be somewhere else...

I also noticed this loss of information after a crash:
- read status of new messages is lost
- replied-to status is lost
- the messages list position is reset to the top (IIRC)

This happened to me yesterday, several hours after I had read the messages, so both claws-mail and the filesystem had plenty of time to write the information to disk.

OS: Arch Linux 64 bit
Filesystem: ext4 (with commit=30)
Claws-mail: 3.9.1
Metadata handling: Safer
