HTML file containing <BR> tags

The <BR> tag is not entered as an empty line if it is preceded by an empty <span> tag. If I remove the <span> tag, an empty line is displayed.

Example:

<span class="S1311">NYSE open 14:30 close 21:00 </span><br>
<span class="S1150"></span><br>
<span class="S1150">LSE  open 08:00 close 16:30 </span><br>


I am attaching an HTML file containing above code. The HTML file has passed the w3c validator check successfully.

the gtkhtml2 plugin has now been dropped and superseded by the Fancy plugin
