It would be great to get this up to date with recent versions.

Especially, please add support for the upcoming 16.06 LTS (xenial).

Xenial repositories include 3.13.1, which is already out of date.

In this regard, please ask Ubuntu for synchronizing Debian version, it's the usual way to get the latest.

They do, but their release cycles are such that users cannot always get the latest Claws Mail, and as it stands Claws Mail releases have crucial bug fixes. I thought that was why you maintained a PPA.

I personally build Claws Mail for myself, but I think an up to date PPA would be very good for getting full reach to a wide range of Linux users.

If you would rather not support Ubuntu in this way, then I suggest you close the PPA, because it hasn't been updated for years and is sorely out of date.

If you need some help updating the PPA, please let me know. But my thought is that if you already have the PPA, you already have the deb build environment to upload packages to the PPA, you just haven't done it in a while. I think it just should be part of your general release cycle.

No, that PPA was maintained because they usually don't sync unless requested by users on launchpad or there's an interested maintainer.

For example in this precise case I think there was enough time to upload it to Xenial (22 days):

* Debian sid got claws-mail 3.13.2-1 on 2016-01-26¹
* According their schedule² DebianImportFreeze ended on 2016-02-18

With this I'm not impliying they don't do on purpose. Everybody, including Ubuntu maintainers, has a life and that's fine, but don't blame release cycles mismatching for not having it in Ubuntu.

Better blame yourself for not having requested it timely ;-)

That's all understood! But it seems the original reason for the PPA stands: "they usually don't sync unless requested by users on launchpad or there's an interested maintainer." So, something went wrong and we didn't get a sync. :)

Is it that hard to do? You should already have everything in place. It would make life easier for many users who, unlike me, don't know how to build things on their own. The fact stands that Ubuntu users can't get the latest Claws Mail without building it.

I wish I could blame myself, but it's impossible because I'm perfect. :) :) :)

I am going to try to get a sync/merge from Debian into Ubuntu 16.04 but no promises! If the merge goes smoothly, it'll still have to go through the Ubuntu archive admins due to being past beta freeze. See my follow up on the mailing list for details.

Then may I ask what is the point of even having a PPA? PPAs are typically used to bypass the wait period between Ubuntu releases but the PPA has not been updated in over 2 years and therefore it is completely outdated by a lot.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=claws-mail&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all

Ubuntu 16.04 = claws-mail 3.13.2
Ubuntu 16.10 = claws-mail 3.14.0
Ubuntu 17.04 = claws-mail 3.14.1

Your PPA maxes out at 3.11.1 yet your website tells Ubuntu users to use the PPA on the downloads page.

If you do not want to maintain your PPA then alright but at least update your website to stop directing people to it and maybe just remove the PPA entirely. At the moment, the website is telling people to use something that is no longer worth using.

Note that the PPA is not mine so I can't do anything about that, but I will point out that as of Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus), currently in development, I have resync'd Ubuntu's claws-mail with Debian's.

This means as soon as Debian gets a new version, it should be straight-up imported into Ubuntu. Things that can block this include freeze periods and autopkgtest promotion failures. (Aside: I see that 3.14.1-2 is still in zesty-proposed; It's probably a build failure and I will investigate.)

The PPA may still be useful for folks on older Ubuntu releases, including 16.04 LTS. But as I say, it's not my PPA.
