It appears that claws-mail automatically sends receipt returns when a message is displayed (which is not the same thing as read), but also when it is deleted (saying that it was not read). So if you delete a message it will send two receipt, one positive and one negative.
I think it should only send when confirm that you have read the message, so that the senders does not think that you have read it before you actually have read it and so that spammers do not know that you are using the e-mail address they have sent.

Claws Mail never sends Return Receipts automatically. It is always a conscious effort by the user (by clicking a button).
